Term Insurance vs Whole Life Insurance: Which Life Cover Should You Buy?

Published September 23, 2026 Β· By PPC Integrated Consultancy

Choosing between term insurance and whole life insurance is one of the first big decisions in building a life cover strategy, and the two work quite differently despite both falling under “life insurance.”

What is Term Insurance?

A term plan provides a large sum assured for a fixed period, say 20 or 30 years, purely for protection. There’s no maturity payout if you outlive the term, which is exactly why premiums are dramatically lower than other life insurance products for the same cover amount.

What is Whole Life Insurance?

Whole life insurance covers you for your entire lifetime (often up to age 99 or 100) and typically includes a savings or investment component, meaning it builds cash value over time and pays out eventually, whether you pass away or reach the end of the policy term.

Premium and Payout Comparison

For the same sum assured, term insurance premiums run a fraction of what whole life insurance costs, because you’re paying purely for risk cover, not for an investment component bundled in. Whole life policies cost more but build surrender value over time that a term plan simply doesn’t offer.

Which One Should You Buy?

If your priority is maximizing protection for your family at the lowest cost, a large term cover is almost always the better choice, and you can invest the premium difference separately for potentially better returns. Whole life insurance can make sense for specific goals like estate planning or guaranteed lifelong cover, but shouldn’t replace adequate term cover for most working professionals.
