Health Insurance Waiting Period Explained: What It Means for Your Claims

Published September 22, 2026 Β· By PPC Integrated Consultancy

One of the most misunderstood parts of a health insurance policy is the waiting period, the gap between buying the policy and being able to claim for certain conditions. Not knowing this can mean a rejected claim right when you need cover most.

What is a Waiting Period?

A waiting period is a defined window after policy purchase during which certain claims aren’t payable. It exists so insurers aren’t immediately exposed to claims for conditions the policyholder may already have known about before buying cover.

Types of Waiting Periods

Most policies carry an initial waiting period of 30 days for any illness (accidents are usually covered from day one), a pre-existing disease waiting period of 2 to 4 years for conditions you had before buying the policy, and specific waiting periods, often 1 to 2 years, for named conditions like cataracts, hernia, or joint replacement.

How Waiting Periods Affect Claims

If you’re hospitalized for a covered condition within the waiting period, the claim will typically be rejected, which is exactly the scenario that catches people off guard. This is why disclosing pre-existing conditions honestly at the time of purchase matters, non-disclosure can void the entire policy later, not just the specific claim.

How to Reduce Your Waiting Period

Buying cover early, before a condition develops, is the simplest way to avoid waiting period issues altogether. Some insurers also offer to reduce the pre-existing disease waiting period for an additional premium, worth asking about if you have a known condition.
